“Joy's style of teaching along with her patient and caring
attitude made my first experience with pottery exceptional! So

Classes focus on promoting clay skills while enhancing individual expression.
Participants will learn hand building techniques such as coil, pinch and
slab construction, how to throw a variety of forms on the potter’s
wheel, as well as glazing techniques. Form, function, surface decoration,
altered forms, and group projects are also explored. Joy gives demonstrations
each week to illustrate different techniques and projects for the students.
Some of the projects offered have been masks, mugs, vases, lanterns, lidded
jars, bowls, mirrors, plates, ocarinas, and more. There is a wide
selection of glaze colors to choose from and all glazes are food safe.
Joy creates a class atmosphere that is supportive and informal, with students
freely interacting with one another. She structures the direction of each
class to meet the needs of the students and gives lots of individual attention. Joy
loves to teach and believes everyone is inherently creative. Joy
enjoys students' clay explorations and she likes to encourage them to discover
something about their own creative style.
“Watching Joy’s beautiful hands form fluid shapes inspired
me to try new things. Joy is calm and patient and taught us “the
sky’s the limit!””
David W. Henion Leverett, MA
Joy Friedman has been teaching pottery classes for over 25 years. She
has taught at Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., Amherst Community
Art School, Amherst, Mass. and Mudpie Potters, Leverett, Mass., as well
as currently in her pottery studio at the Leverett Crafts and Arts. She
has given ceramic workshops for the elderly at Amherst Nursing Home, and
offered “Artability” Workshops to students with disabilities
in Amherst and Florence, Mass.
“I was thoroughly enamored of wheel throwing before I started classes
with Joy. Then I discovered the amazing world of hand building! I
love physically negotiating with the clay as I entice cooperation from
my co-creator, the clay. Oh, I still throw, but my great love is hand
building!”
